We may not believe in the many organs that save us alive and beating, but we couldn’t exist without them!

The human spirit is one of the multiple critical organs in the body and one of the most complex structures.

We all have a heartbeat in our chest, but learning how to draw a realistic heart is challenging!

It doesn’t have to be super difficult either, so we’re here with this tutorial to show you how easy it can be.

Please enjoy our step-by-step How to Draw a Realistic Heart tutorial as we walk you through everything you need to know about this vital organ.

How to Draw A Realistic Heart

Step 1

There are many small parts that we are going to draw in this tutorial on how to draw a realistic heart, so we’re going to keep things simple for this first step.

For now, let’s outline the base of the heart. This is the area where the ventricles are located. To do this, we draw a curved line pointing down.

This stripe will be comprehensive and smooth but also a bit rough. Do your best to replicate the line as it appears in our reference image, and then we can move on to step 2.

Step 2

You’ve outlined the base of your realistic heart design, so we can add more complicated parts.

As mentioned, the heart is divided into a few sections and parts; the ones we draw now will be near the top.

For the first part, we’ll draw a rounded shape with a thin part at the base in the upper left part of the heart.

This shape will look basically like an upside-down lemon. Eventually, finish this step by drawing more curved lines for the upper right parts of the heart.

There will be some blank spaces, but we’ll fill them in over time.

Step 3

Hearts have many chambers and tube-like structures to pump blood in and out.

In this third step of our tutorial on how to draw a realistic heart, we will draw the central part that facilitates these tubes, called the aorta.

Use curved stripes to draw a small tube from the heart’s upper left side.

So for the aorta, we will use more rounded lines for another section with two smaller tubes radiating from it. Draw another thick tube on the right to move on to step 4.

Step 4

You’ve completed the outline of your realistic heart drawing, so the next few steps will focus on adding the details and finishing touches.

Hearts have many thick veins, and we’ll start by drawing some of these veins on the surface of the heart.

To draw these veins, we will use some thick lines. Each vein begins with a single line and branches out into many more.

We will add three branches of these veins of different sizes in the heart, but you can add more if you wish. Then you are ready for the finishing touches in the next step!

Step 5

We will add many more details to the heart to prepare you for this tutorial’s last step on drawing a realistic heart.

To do this, we’ll add some curved strokes along the tubes and then more lines near most of the inner perimeter of the outlines.

These lines help the heart look more textured and realistic, and you should do your best to make these lines look like our reference image.

Once you’ve completed those final details, add some of your own! You could draw other organs or even label the different parts of the heart.

Step 6

This is the last step of your realistic heart drawing, and we will finish coloring it.

In this rendering, we’re aiming for a real heart, so we’ve opted for more realistic colors in our reference image.

We used different shades of pink to give the different parts of the heart a fleshy look.

You can opt for a few similar shades if you want your design to look like our example, but feel free to use some of your colors too!

We recommend using some watercolor paint as this would look more like a textbook diagram. However, you can use any other medium; whatever you choose will look amazing!
